Maybe you could criticize me for being uncomfortable with how raw Animal is, and say that is a sign of my learned ideals of femininity. And yes, truthfulness is hard to convey in art, but I’m not sure I would celebrate Taddeo’s vision of womanhood or even say it is accurate. The latter intention is a hard balance to strike - and I think Taddeo overshot with this one, trying to portray this sort of radical truth, perhaps. This might sound a bit pretentious, but there are books that are meant to be books, and books that are meant to be art. I appreciate a book that brings out discomfort in the reader, because that is often a sign of growth, but I don’t think Animal brought me to any kind of new realization. I think the closest I can get is “uneasy”, but not in a way that makes me think. I come from a long line of Irish storytellers on my father’s side and theatre people on my mother’s. What prepared me for a life of writing fiction? Though I have a BA from Brandeis University in English and American Literature and a BFA in illustration from Rhode Island School of Design, the true answer is probably genes. I love the crazy fun and infinite possibility of storytelling. I love when characters come to me out of nowhere and make me cry so hard my mascara runs or laugh until my stomach hurts. I love to slip into another person’s skin and feel what it’s like to live another life. I love words, dictionaries, thesauruses, sharp pencils, the smell of book ink and the delicious art of carving out sentences on clean white paper. There’s a Lego in my bum which fits with the Lego in my chair and when I sit down to write, I hear the satisfying snap of the two pieces fitting together. Patrick McDonnell possesses an elegance of line and narrative that both transcends and defines his medium. That said, Groovitude is Get Fuzzy at its finest.Contains cartoons from The Dog Is Not a Toy and Fuzzy Logic. Get Fuzzy is the comic strip for everyone who loves their pets with an attitude. Rob tries to meet women, but his pets continually subvert his efforts. Bucky refuses to eat vegetables but insists on snarfing up Rob's plants. Bucky, a temperamental cat who carries a boom box and goes on spending sprees, definitely calls the shots in this eclectic household, while Satchel is a kindly canine with a sensitive soul who tries to remain neutral, even though he bears the brunt of his feline companion's mischief.īetween the three of them, the Wilco household faces a whole host of trials and tribulations that classify them as family. Get Fuzzy features Rob Wilco, a single, mild-mannered advertising executive who's the so-called guardian of Bucky and Satchel, anthropomorphic scamps that still live by their animal instincts. Get Fuzzy has become a hit cartoon with its bitingly funny portrait of single life with pets.Īnd why not? The laughs come fast and furious. Towards the end of 2022 fans of the animated series Final Space were upset (putting it mildly) to discover that the series wouldn’t be continuing after its third season. While it’s hard to overstate the convenience of these digital platforms they carry a danger that’s important. Alongside those were stands promoting digital distribution services, e-books, and audiobooks, of all kinds. While this is a useful warning about oversharing, it masks a problem with our constant shift towards digital content and who owns it.Ī few days ago I spent some time at the London Book Fair, enjoying the sight of immutable physical copies of information everywhere. There’s a well known, and false, statement that once something’s on the internet it’s there forever. While for some this is little more than a moment of whistful nostalgia (and most weren’t even aware it was still running) it’s a good opportunity to have a conversation about ownership of digital media. Recently, Netflix announced that its physical DVD rentals business will be closing its doors later this year. Would you listen to Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim again? Why? I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s reading of this wonderful collection of snippets from his family life and will most definitely be listening to more. The section about his brother's wedding is comic heaven (including the 'thing' his brother trains his Great Dane to do) and by marrying into this family, his sister-in-law must be one of the most tolerant women on earth. For example the tragedy of a sister who struggles with mental illness and who is openly hostile when her brother pays a visit, a neglected child who is also a miniature demon and a mother whose drinking habits make her behaviour erratic and a danger to her children, but overall there is warmth, humour and understanding in his writing. Certainly he doesn't shirk from portraying people as they really are. Instead I found his stories of his large and characterful family much more of a gentle and dare I say heart-warming experience. I had never read anything by David Sedaris before this and imagined he would be a sort of angry young man railing against modern life etc. Outstandingly sad, funny and bitchy family life Having no firm religious beliefs, it was probably a bit easier for me to look at this with little opposition, so again, I'd recommended reading it with a very open mind. I thought this book was wonderful, informative and beyond interesting. To fully enjoy this book, you have to shake off all stereotypes and just absorb the words on the page, and if you're able to do that, there is no reason you shouldn't enjoy what you're reading. A friend recommended Sitchin to me, and at first I sort of laughed because of how the media portrays people who believe in aliens and because science-fiction makes them into gray creatures with big eyes that probe humans.Īlso, the fact that I saw his name next to David Icke's a lot. |
